Richard Lochhead stresses Scotland's EU fishing role

22 March 10 17:21 GMT

Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead has vowed to try to give the voice of Scotland's fishing industry maximum influence on the European stage.

Mr Lochhead met with Maria Damanaki, the new EU Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Commissioner.

He said the Brussels meeting had been a chance to stress Scotland's role.

Mr Lochhead said after the talks: "It was important to meet with the commissioner to explain the importance of fishing to Scotland."

He explained: "Scotland continues to demonstrate real leadership on fisheries conservation.

"Making Scotland's voice heard loud and clear in the debate on future European fisheries policy has never been more important."

Earlier this year, fishermen described a deal between the EU and Norway on fish quotas as a "mixed bag" for the Scottish fleet.
