Views sought on school proposals in Fort William

12 March 10 09:46 GMT

People in the Fort William area are to be consulted on two plans for the future of schools for primary children.

Highland Council proposes merging Fort William and Upper Achintore primaries in a new building on a new site.

Also planned are two new schools on a joint campus for Caol Primary and an amalgamation of Fort William and Lochyside Roman Catholic schools.

The public consultations will run for six weeks and the results reported to councillors in August.

Meanwhile, the local authority will also consult on the shutting five primary schools at locations across the region.

Achaphubuil, near Fort William; Achnasheen, in Wester Ross; Borrodale, on Skye; and Glenborrodale, in Ardnamurchan, have been shut for some time as a result of falling rolls. Highland Council has proposed formal closures.

It has also suggested that Uig Primary School on Skye should close as the roll will reduce to only one pupil in August and the condition of the school is considered to be poor.
