Teenager dies after car hits tree

23 July 09 16:00 GMT

A teenager has died and his passenger has been seriously injured in a crash on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Zak (known as Jack) Chan, 18, had been driving his blue Mazda on Frogston Road West at 2145 BST on Tuesday when he hit a tree near Mounthooley Loan junction.

After being cut free, along with his passenger, the teenager was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

His passenger, Emily Chan, 18, remains in a critical condition in the Western General Hospital.

The accident happened as torrential rain accompanied by thunder and lightning struck the area, which is prone to flooding.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the Fairmilehead area on Tuesday night, and witnessed the collision, or who saw the blue Mazda being driven in the area before the collision took place, to contact police immediately.

"Anyone else who has any information that can assist our inquiries should also get in touch."
