Murder charge after woman's death at Birmingham house

11 May 10 15:56 GMT

A 42-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman at a house in Birmingham.

Police were alerted just after 1740 BST on Friday after Sylvia Smith was discovered by a neighbour at her home in Mere Road, Erdington.

Ms Smith died at the scene, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

Robert Edwards, of Richborough Drive, Dudley, was remanded in custody by Birmingham magistrates. He will appear at Birmingham Crown Court on 13 May.

Det Insp Sharon Naughton, who is leading the investigation, urged anyone who saw or heard anything unusual in the area on Friday to contact them.

She added: "The whole family is reeling from the devastating way in which she died and I would urge anyone who knows anything at all that may help our enquiries to come forward at their earliest opportunity."
