Students protest at closure plan

18 November 09 21:38 GMT

About 200 students at Birmingham University have protested against plans to close its Sociology Department.

University officials have proposed bringing the department under the umbrella of other social sciences.

One sociology student, Abigail Gill, said see feared the move could lead to teaching by tutors who were not experts in the field of sociology.

The university said the plans were at a very early stage and it aimed to allow sociology to "thrive".

Professor Edward Peck, of the College of Social Sciences, said the university wanted to see whether or not sociology "was better placed in another unit or department which has real disciplinary and expertise links so that sociology can thrive at Birmingham".
