Marathon hero to open 80,000 gym

13 January 09 21:14 GMT

A council's £80,000 revamped gym is being opened by a local marathon hero.

Dave Heeley, known as Blind Dave, set himself a challenge to run seven world marathons in seven days in April last year with his guide Malcolm Carr.

He ran the London Marathon after spending a week running in Brazil, the Falklands, Los Angeles, Sydney, Dubai and Tunisia.

Mr Heeley, who lives in West Bromwich, will open Wednesbury Leisure Centre's new gym on Saturday morning.

The event will coincide with him being named Sandwell Council's official "physical activity champion" to encourage people across the borough to get more exercise.
