Sea threatens historic lighthouse

26 March 09 14:37 GMT

A lighthouse that has helped guide ships through treacherous waters off Suffolk for more than 200 years could be lost to the sea within five years.

Land around Orford Ness lighthouse is disappearing into the sea.

Keith Seaman, the lighthouse keeper, said the building could be lost if coastal erosion continues at the current rate.

Options being considered, are to move the lighthouse inland or build a new one on a more stable foundation.

Built in 1792, the Orford Ness light has survived storms, German machine-gun fire and flying bombs.
