Ex-minister made chair of trust

A former minister and Essex MP who was made a lord has been appointed as the new chairman of the Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

Lord Tony Newton OBE will start work on 1 March 2009.

Former health minister Lord Newton was MP for Braintree between 1974 and 1997 and was appointed a life peer as Lord Newton of Braintree in 1997.

He is a former chair of the North East Essex Mental Health NHS Trust and the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust.

Lord Newton said: "I am looking forward to taking on this new challenge. I am delighted to have the privilege of supporting health services for the people of Suffolk."

Keith Pearson, chairman of NHS East of England, said: "I am delighted that someone of Tony's calibre has taken on this role.

"His experience locally and nationally will be an asset which will be highly valuable in delivering our vision."
