21 July 05 19:14 GMT

A country park in Suffolk has been named one of the best in England and Wales by a heritage organisation.

Clare Castle Country Park, in Clare, near Haverhill, has been given a Green Flag Award.

The scheme, managed by the Civic Trust, is the national standard for parks and green spaces.

Winners vary from Victorian parks to nature reserves, country parks and cemeteries. Sites must be welcoming, safe and well-maintained.

As well as winning a Green Flag Award, the park has been awarded Green Heritage Site Accreditation, which recognises best practice in the care and upkeep of green spaces.

Suffolk County Council's Colin Hart said: "I am delighted to hear that Clare Castle Country Park has won these two prestigious awards.

"This is a fantastic achievement and reflects the commitment and hard work that the county council has put into managing this historic and unique site."
