Giant city wheel starts turning

22 July 09 07:01 GMT

A giant tourist wheel has opened for business in Sheffield.

The 173ft (53m) high observation wheel on Fargate will dominate the city's skyline until January after the city council gave approval last month.

The wheel, similar to those in London, Manchester and York, includes 42 gondolas, each capable of carrying up to eight people.

It is hoped the attraction will bring increased tourism to the city and help boost trade.

John Lowrey, from World Tourist Attractions, the wheel's owners, said it took 10 days to erect the structure.

"We use a 200-tonne crane to lift the axle and the main frame up," he said.

"There's been about 30 people from Holland, Switzerland and the UK working on the whole project."
