Work to start on council housing in Mansfield

10 March 10 14:24 GMT

The first council homes are to be built in a Nottinghamshire town for more than 30 years as part of a £5m project.

Work to build the 45 new homes on Mansfield's Bellamy Road Estate is expected to start at the end of March.

The district council said the new properties, being built on the Colston, Shelston and Syerston areas of the estate, will be energy efficient.

Construction work on the properties is expected to be completed by March 2011 with tenants moving in soon after.

The authority has put in £2.5m of funding for the scheme with the other £2.5m coming from the government's Homes and Communities Agency.

A council spokesperson said it was hoped that the new homes will help meet the increased demand for affordable rented properties in the area and provide jobs for local people during their construction.
