26 June 09 07:02 GMT

Construction work is to start on the long-awaited widening of the A46 through Nottinghamshire.

Work to make the 17-mile (28km) stretch between Newark and Widmerpool a dual carriageway will provide a new, fast link between the A1 and M1.

It is hoped the route will improve safety, journey times and reliability.

The Highways Agency said the improvement work was due to be completed in 2012 and will also include bypasses for East Stoke and Farndon.
