16 January 10 12:13 GMT

A mother and her boyfriend accused of murdering her 15-month-old daughter have appeared in court in Oldham.

Violet Mullen was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital on Tuesday after suffering a cardiac arrest but died a short time later.

Gary Alcock, 28, and Claire Flanagan, 22, both of Huddersfield Road, Oldham, are also charged with causing or allowing the death of a child.

The pair were remanded in custody by magistrates in Oldham.

Ms Flanagan and Mr Alcock, who is not the baby's father, spoke only to confirm their names and address.

The couple are due before magistrates again on Monday when their case is expected to be sent to Manchester Crown Court for trial.

Police have not disclosed the results of a post-mortem examination into Violet's death.
