Murder probe after Lancaster street stabbing

12 March 10 20:11 GMT

A murder investigation is under way after a woman was stabbed to death in front of residents of a street in Lancashire.

Police were called to reports of an incident involving a man and a woman on School House Lane in the Halton area of Lancaster on Friday morning.

The woman, who was from Ingleton, North Yorkshire, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The area has been cordoned off for crime scene investigation work and a major incident room has been opened at Lancaster police station.

Det Supt Kevin Toole, of Lancashire police, said: "We are now beginning to build up a picture of what happened in Lancaster this morning, but I would still like to appeal to anybody who may have witnessed this incident to contact police.

"I would also like to speak with anybody who thinks they may have any information which could help in any way with the investigation and I would like to thank those people who have already come forward.

"Crimes of this nature are rare and I would like to take the opportunity to say we are not looking for anybody else in connection with this incident."
