Beach cleaning machine brought in

12 June 07 16:59 GMT

Efforts to keep a Lancashire beach clean are being stepped up in time for the summer season.

The new sandy beach at Morecambe, between the Battery and the Town Hall, is being kept neat and tidy with the help of a new sweeping machine.

The machine combs and levels the beach, removing litter, debris and seaweed in its path.

The beach underwent a facelift last year, with golden sands replacing the resort's pebbles.

The sand, which was dredged from the Irish Sea, mid-way between Barrow and the Isle of Man, was added as part of essential sea defence work.

Lancaster City Council is also urging visitors to the beach to use the litter and dog waste bins provided, or to take their rubbish away.
