Councils axe jobs to plug deficit

19 February 09 10:36 GMT

Almost 40 council workers will be made redundant in Hampshire as local authorities attempt to save money.

Thirty job losses, at Test Valley Borough Council, are in addition to 30 vacant posts being cut by the local authority.

The council said it had to address a budget deficit of £1.9m - up from £220,000 in September.

Winchester City Council said it had managed to balance a deficit of £2.2m, but still planned to cut seven jobs.

A spokeswoman said the redundancies would be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

Southampton City Council, which has an £11.3m deficit, is also cutting 128 posts, but 64 of these are vacant and the remaining staff will be redeployed.
