Man charged over Essex pedestrian death

A man has been charged with causing the death of a pedestrian by careless driving following a collision in Essex.

Leonard Johnson, 56, of Overton Road, Benfleet, was struck by a Mazda 626 in the town's High Street on 12 November and died in hospital nine days later.

Police said a man aged 63 from Benfleet had been charged and appeared before magistrates in Southend.

He spoke only to confirm his personal details and was released on bail to reappear on 18 May.
