A company which operates Derrys department store in Plymouth and four home furnishings stores in Devon and Cornwall has gone into administration.
Vergo Retailing, which took over Derrys in February 2009, also owns Homemaker stores in Exmouth, Kingsteignton, Launceston and Cothill, Plymouth.
Financial consultancy MCR has been brought in as administrator.
Vergo blamed a "difficult trading environment during the economic downturn".
A sign outside Derrys confirmed that Vergo was in the hands of the administrators.
Vergo employs a total of 942 staff across 19 outlets, including those in Devon and Cornwall.
Sarah Bell, of MCR, said: "Unfortunately the company has endured periods of financial loss.
"Like many retailers, it has experienced a difficult trading environment during the economic downturn."
No-one was available for comment from Vergo.
