MP criticises street prostitution

28 October 08 17:58 GMT

Reading West MP Martin Salter has written to Thames Valley Police over his concerns about reports of "aggressive prostitution" in the town.

He has received a number of complaints from residents living in and around the Oxford Road area.

Mr Salter said they have had "enough of blatant and open soliciting in their locality".

The MP wants a targeted police approach. Officers recently started a crackdown on the problem in Slough.

Mr Salter said: "Frankly this situation cannot be allowed to continue.

"I have received complaints from a number of my constituents who are reluctant to leave their homes at night and who are greeted of a morning with the unsavoury tools of last night's business on their doorsteps."

He said he is now awaiting a response from Ch Supt Richard Bennett, Berkshire West command unit chief.
