Opening Up Politics

11 April 06 10:27 GMT

BBC One's This Week has won the Hansard Society Award for Opening Up Politics.

Andrew, Diane, Michael and the team were delighted to get this award, from the Hansard Society and Channel Four.

We were up against Cosmopolitan's campaign to get more young women voting, and the Guardian's Election Blog.

"Incisive political journalism"

Clare Ettinghausen, Chief Executive of the Hansard Society said:

"All three of the short-listed candidates embody much of what is at the heart of the Hansard Society's work, connecting politics between Parliamentarians and the public as a whole.

While the final decision was hard we felt that This Week's combination of incisive political journalism delivered in a light-hearted manner, combined with an eclectic array of guests, made them worthy winners.

"

Thank you!

Diane and Michael were the ones who went up the road to Channel Four HQ to pick up the shiny prize.

Our editor, Jamie Donald, had this to add:

"I hope it's the first of many. It's very good news, not least because the Hansard Society is a very prestigious political body and it's rare for Channel 4 to give an award to a rival channel.

I'd like to thank everyone who's worked so hard on This Week over the past few years: presenters, producers, editors, studio teams, and support staff - and in particular Vicky Flind and Andrew Neil who've made it such a wonderful programme to watch and to work on.

"

To which we can only add another thank you - to you, for watching!
