Isle of Man hospital hit by norovirus outbreak

15 February 10 13:06 GMT

An outbreak of the winter vomiting virus affecting several staff and patients at an Isle of Man hospital has been reported.

Incidences of diarrhoea and vomiting at Ramsey and District Cottage Hospital suggested that norovirus was present, the Public Health Directorate said.

Two wards have been affected by the virus and closed to admissions.

The bug lasts between 24 and 48 hours. Patients are advised to drink lots of water and eat easily-digestible food.

Anyone needing medical advice has been told to contact their GP by telephone rather than visit the surgery.

Even after the symptoms have passed, patients remain infectious for 48 hours so those suffering are reminded to remain off work during this time.
