Doctors in Christmas calls appeal

25 December 08 09:23 GMT

People falling ill in the Isle of Man over Christmas are being urged not to attend hospital A&E - unless it is a real emergency.

The Department of Health said people who urgently needed to see a GP should contact the Manx Emergency Doctors' Service (MEDS).

However, anyone who suffers a serious injury or illness should visit Noble's Hospital as normal, officials said.

MEDS will be open throughout the festive period.

Maric Thorpe, A&E consultant at Noble's, said: "I'd like to reassure the public that if they need urgent medical attention, they will receive it.

"However, in order to help us to help you, I'd ask you to think about whether you would be better coming to A&E or using MEDS instead.

"People are also reminded that if you have chest pain or a life-threatening emergency you should always call 999."
