The States cannot afford to bring the wreck of the Asterix back to Guernsey and put it on display, the Culture and Leisure minister has said.
The Gallo-Roman shipwreck was found in local waters in 1982 and since 1999 has been undergoing restoration in the UK.
Deputy Mike O'Hara said his department had spent a lot on the restoration, but it cost too much to bring it home.
He said: "We'd like to get the ship back and put it on display, but the money is not there at the moment."
Deputy O'Hara said: "Perhaps the sensible thing is to look for private investment or even someone in the private industry could help and give us a building or somewhere we can put it into, but at the end of the day at this present time the States would struggle to do something with it."
