Poland restores citizenship to three 1968 emigres

President Aleksander Kwasniewski has restored Polish citizenship to three people who emigrated from Poland in March 1968 and currently live in Israel, presidential chancellery spokesman Marek Siwiec said on Wednesday.

The three were "just the beginning, and the President expected more interest from emigres", Siwiec was quoted by Polish radio as saying.

Under the new constitution, the president was entitled to grant citizenship in special cases by a decision of his own, Siwiec said.

Kwasniewski had decided that the 1968 emigrations were special cases, and he would grant citizenship in that spirit.
