British men's hopefuls

Jamie Delgado

Place in ATP champions race: 120
Age: 23

British National Champion Jamie Delgado has made steady progress over the last few years, though few would claim he will ever reach the heights of Tim Henman or Greg Rusedski.

Nevertheless, he is having a good year. His best result in a tour event came when he reached the quarter-final of the Goldflake Open in India.

In February he played in the Australian Open as a lucky loser from the qualifying rounds, losing to Marc Rosset in his first match.

Under the new ranking system in the men's game, which takes account of results only from the start of the year, that form put him in an unlikely 17th place in the world lists.

He has dropped down to 120 since then, but it proves Delgado is heading in the right direction.

He beat Barry Cowan to become British champion last November and played in Britain's defeat by the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup.

Last year he reached the second round at Wimbledon, losing to Sebastien Grosjean.

Arvind Parmar

Place in ATP champions race: 158
Age: 22

Parmar is the great hope of British men's tennis and aged 22 is already ranked in the world's top 200.

Last year he qualified for Wimbledon and beat Albert Costa in the first round, going out to a highly-complimentary Greg Rusedski in his next match.

This year, he qualified for the Australian Open but lost in the first round to Moroccan Younes el Aynaoui in a thrilling five-set encounter, when many commentators said he should have won.

A regular finalist in junior and satellite events, Parmar undoubtedly has a big future.

His aim for 1999, of reaching the world's top 200, was achieved with ease and he could soon be challenging for the top 100.

Barry Cowan
Barry Cowan
Age: 25

Cowan is another player who has just broken into the world's top 200, but at 25 it would be a surprise if he went all that much further.

He has done well in the minor Challenger events this year, with three semi-final appearances.

A burly 6ft 2in, Cowan played under-15 hockey for the North of England.

Last year at Wimbledon he was unlucky to come up against former world number Jim Courier in the first round and went out in straight sets.

Martin Lee

Age: 22

Lee exemplifies the problems faced by young British tennis players.

His talent was spotted early and at the age of 14 he joined the Rover LTA School in Bisham Abbey under Ian Barclay, who coached Pat Cash to the Wimbledon title in 1987.

In 1996 he was the top junior in the world but stepping up to the main ATP tour has proved difficult.

The left-hander from London's highest world ranking is a disappointing 254, which he achieved two years ago. Last year he won the ATP Futures event at Sunderland.

He was involved in one of the epic battles of last year's Wimbledon but eventually went out in the first round to Argentina's Guillermo Canas, losing 9-7 in the fifth set.

Luke Milligan

Age: 23

The son of a London taxi driver had his moment in the spotlight in 1996 when he reached the third round of Wimbledon, beating Jonas Bjorkman and Nicolas Lapentti along the way.

That run improved his world ranking by 150 to the dizzy heights of 217 but he has struggled since then.

Last year he lost in straight sets to Fabrice Santoro of France in the first round after having been granted a wild card.

Lee Childs

Age: 18
Lee Childs has trained with the likes of Yannick Noah and Stefan Edberg. At the age of 11 his service was timed at 107mph and today he can fire it down at 125mph.
