Teen drink sting catches 57 shops

Teens at off licence (generic)

Almost 60 shops have been caught selling alcohol to 14 and 15-year-olds in a major trading standards operation.

Six off-licences in Carmarthenshire face being banned from selling alcohol, and another seven are looking at a three-month suspension.

It is understood big name supermarkets were among those caught in the campaign that saw nearly two in three shops sell to underage teenagers.

The council said the figures were "worrying and disappointing."

Trading standards manager Roger Edmunds said: "Many outlets sold on more than one occasion and over a short period of time.

"With over half of the attempts by young people to buy alcohol succeeding, it as an extremely disappointing set of results.

"We are referring the more serious cases for review.

"There is no option but to take enforcement action"
Councillor Pam Palmer

"We are recommending that the council's licensing committee should revoke six off-licences and suspend seven for up to three months."

In total, 57 of the 92 shops tested in the largest exercise of its kind in the county sold alcohol to the youngsters, resulting in 100 sales out of 194 attempts.

"In other cases we are recommending additional conditions to be imposed on the licensees," added Mr Edmunds.

Trading standards used volunteer test purchasers who were either 14 or 15 during the campaign carried out in the summer.

The council's licensing sub-committee will meet next month to review the cases and consider penalties.

Executive board member Pam Palmer said a great deal of effort had been made making licensees aware of their responsibilities.

"Illegal sales of alcohol to youngsters are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"These figures are extremely worrying as a great deal of education has taken place so there is no excuse.

"There is no option but to take enforcement action."
