Rugby pitch up for sale - £75k

Stradey Park

Diehard Scarlets fans with £75,000 to spare and rather large gardens are being offered the chance to buy the entire pitch from Stradey Park.

The ground hosts its last ever game on Friday before the regional rugby side move to a new £23m stadium in Llanelli.

The pitch, which has hosted 2,578 games is then being put up for sale, either in its entirety, in eight larger £10K lots or in one metre £10 squares.

Fixtures and fittings including seats, gates and signs will also be sold.

Llanelli first moved to Stradey in 1879 and the pitch has been in its current position since 1904.

The Scarlets will first release the option for the pitch to be bought in its entirety for £75,000.

Alternatively it will be offered in eight separate lots of £10,000, which included both posts and the full playing surface divided into six lots including the in-goal areas.

"This pitch has seen some amazing games in its history and with a 78% success rate must have some magic sewn into it"
Gareth Davies

The deadline for sales will be 1700 GMT on 7 November.

If eight individual bids are not made - then the remaining turf will go on general sale the following day in metre squares for £10 each.

The club also compiled an inventory of memorabilia from around the ground which will also go on sale the same day.

Items include individual seats, exit and gate signs, signage from inside the players' tunnel and even door signs for the dressing rooms.

Managing Director Gareth Davies said: "This pitch has seen some amazing games in its history and with a 78% success rate must have some magic sewn into it.

"By organising an official sale of the pitch we are pleased to give the opportunity to our most devoted supporters to have a part of Stradey Park with them forever.

"This ground has been important to so many people and we believe that there will be interest from across the globe in the sale of our pitch."

The club wants to avoid similar scenes witnessed at neighbouring Swansea three years ago when football fans helped themselves to all manner of keepsakes at the final game at the Vetch.

"We politely remind our supporters that nothing should be removed from the ground during our last game on Friday," added Mr Davies.

"The Scarlets have increased security and there will be a police presence at the game to prevent any incidents.

"The police have issued a statement this week warning crowds that any incursions onto the pitch or removal of items will be treated as criminal offences."
