Student arrests in mass pub crawl

Eight people have been arrested after a mass pub crawl saw over 1,700 youngsters visit bars in Swansea.

Police said they were held for alcohol and anti-social behaviour offences on Wind Street during the annual event known as "Carnage" on Sunday night.

Described as "Swansea's biggest t-shirt fancy dress event", similar pub crawls are held in other UK university cities.

Police said while the vast majority had behaved, a number of students "had stepped out of line."

Inspector Steve Jones said in excess of 1,700 students visited Wind Street, Swansea's main pub area.

"We like to see young people enjoying themselves and having a drink, but unfortunately there are occasions when people step out of line and as police officers we have take the appropriate action," he said.

"Incidents like this in the Swansea student communities are very few and far between.

"We will deal robustly with any incidents of disorder to ensure those visiting the city especially at night will leave having had an enjoyable experience."

A high-profile police operation throughout the summer saw incidents of anti-social behaviour fall in the city centre by 2,000 compared to the previous year.

Swansea Students' Union said the pub crawl was run by a private company and it had banned its promotion on campus before Sunday's event due to concerns about excessive drinking.
