Surfers airlifted in sea rescue

Coastguard Two surfers have been airlifted to safety by helicopter following a rescue operation on Gower.

The men - one from Hayle, Cornwall, and the other from Reading - got into difficulties at Rhossili Bay on Saturday afternoon.

Swansea Coastguard received the first of six emergency call 1500 GMT.

An RAF rescue helicopter from Chivenor airlifted one surfer while the other scrambled onto rocks and was winched to safety.

In addition to the helicopter, the Rhossili Coastguard Rescue Team, the Horton RNLI inshore lifeboat and the Tenby all-weather lifeboat assisted the rescue.

Safety warning

Swansea Coastguard said the men, both aged in their 20s, had got too close to the rocks as the weather closed in.

They did not need medical attention but coastguards issued a safety warning.

Steve Jones, Swansea Coastguard watch manager said: "We received six 999 calls all in quick succession regarding the two male surfers.

"Fortunately we were able to rescue them quickly and both are unharmed."

Mr Jones said weather conditions had been difficult , but perfect for surfing as long as people were "knowledgeable and experienced".

He added: "Surfers should stay within their own limitations, ensuring that they are well informed about local conditions.

"In addition they should always have someone onshore who can call for help, should they start experiencing difficulties."
