Baby delivered after road crash

A woman, who suffered serious injuries after a crash which killed her brother, had to have emergency surgery to save her baby, police have confirmed.

Gemma Solomon, 22, was seven months pregnant when the car she was a passenger in hit a tree.

Her brother Gareth, 28, died in the crash at Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan on Sunday night.

South Wales Police arrested the 22-year-old driver before releasing him on bail pending further inquiries.

Both mother and baby are in a "serious but stable" condition at Cardiff's University Hospital of Wales.

Care worker Ms Solomon was a front seat passenger in a Vauxhall Vectra car, and her brother was in the back, when it crashed.

Surgeons performed emergency surgery on Ms Solomon to save her baby.

"We are devastated by this tragedy"

Her family said in a statement: "We are devastated by this tragedy and we can only pray Gemma's condition continues to improve with each day that passes."

Father-of-two Gareth and Ms Solomon were returning to their family's home village of Sully from a trip to Cardiff when the car crashed.

The family said: "Gareth was a wonderful son, brother and father who adored his little girls.

"He was always a joker, a loving boy and everyone thought the world of him."

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "We are seeking witnesses to the collision or information as to the manner of driving of this vehicle in the area prior to this collision."

Police added that the crash happened on Sunday at about 2000 GMT.
