Parents are fighting to stop the sale of a patch of council-owned land which is used as a play area by children.
They land is at Penywaun, near Aberdare in the Cynon Valley, and they want it turned into a playground instead.
Residents say there are few facilities for children, with the nearest playground on the other side of the estate across main roads.
Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) council said the land was currently being assessed but no decision had been made.
Alison Tucker, 45, who has a nine-year-old son, said the children would be left with nowhere to play if the land was sold.
"It's big enough to have a park with a ball area for the kids.
"There's nothing up here for the children at all, they just haven't got anywhere to go."
She said she was now looking into whether any grants were available to buy the land for the community.
John Gilbert, 54, of Derlwyn, said he was worried about parking problems if houses were built on the land but his main concern was providing children with somewhere to play.
"My kids played on that area and I don't see why other kids can't," he said.
He added the land was not ideal for children, with youngsters sometimes smashing glass there, but RCT could turn it into a proper playground, perhaps with a basketball court.
"There are a lot of kids in the street and all the parents are up in arms about it," he said.
The land owned by RCT council adjoins a larger piece of land which is being sold.
An RCT spokesperson said: "The local health board is selling its portion of the land and has approached us as adjoining landowners to see if we would be interested in selling our pocket of land to make two smaller sites into one larger area.
Children's clinic
"Rhondda Cynon Taf council's estates department has followed normal procedures and is currently assessing this piece of land, in line with our ongoing land review.
"This process has not yet been completed and no decision has been made."
The spokesperson added the local councillor had been and would continue to be consulted about the matter.
RCT councillor Glyn Roberts, who represents Penywaun, said he would like to see a play area and children's clinic on the land but appreciated that local authorities faced tight budgets.
"We need some give and take on both sides so the community can get some benefit out of that land," he said.
"I used to play there myself in the 50s, it's always been a play area.
"There was also a children's clinic there [on the adjoining land] for a number of years but it closed last year and they haven't put another clinic anywhere else in the area so there must be a need for it."
