Vale sports complex gets go-ahead

Hensol Castle New rugby and football pitches, as part of a sports academy in the Vale of Glamorgan have been given the go-ahead.

The 40-acre scheme at Hensol Castle will include five training pitches, running track and a sports pavilion.

The Vale council's planning committee backed the plans put forward by Leekes Ltd, subject to 22 conditions.

Cardiff City FC, Cardiff Blues rugby club, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) and Football Association of Wales (FAW) have joined forces on the project.

The 17th Century Hensol stately home was bought in 2003 by the store group-owning family, which also owns the adjoining Vale of Glamorgan hotel and golf resort.

The planning application included a two-storey pavilion for the WRU, which includes a clinic and changing rooms.

There will also be three full-size grass and one artificial rugby pitches and a grass football pitch.

The three-lane athletics track will include a sprinting area.

A council spokesman said the application was subject to a number of conditions, including one preventing the floodlights being used after 9pm.

The planning report says the traffic impact would be "minimal" because most players and staff would be moving on foot between the hotel and the sports complex.
