Woman dies near quarry crash site

Elizabeth Tranter A woman has been killed on the same stretch of road where four men died in October 2004 when their car plunged down a disused south Wales quarry.

Elizabeth Tranter, 33, a mother-of-two from Swffryd, Blaenau Gwent, was on Swffryd Road near Crumlin when the crash happened on Wednesday morning.

It is thought her car went down an embankment at the side of the road.

In 2004, Alex Williams, Karl Devlin, Shane Powell and driver Jack Magee died when their car plunged down a quarry.

Police and other emergency services were at the scene on Wednesday to try to recover her body and the white Land Rover.

It is believed the mother-of-two, who was well known because of her job selling Avon products, was returning home after dropping her children off at school when the accident happened.

A Gwent Police investigation has begun to find out the cause of the crash.

In January 2006, steel railings were erected along the stretch of road following the October 2004 crash in which the four friends died.

Mr Magee, 47, of Aberbeeg, Blaenau Gwent, was driving a BMW when he lost control of the car and smashed through a concrete barrier and down a near-vertical slope at the disused Monks quarry at Swffryd.

Mr Magee, Mr Powell, 29, from Pontypool, Mr Williams, 21, from Newport, and Mr Devlin, 19, also from Newport, all died instantly.

Following Ms Tranter's death, people living nearby have called for a crash barrier to be installed at the site.

Ms Tranter leaves her two children and partner Steve Williams.
