Anger over cemetery fly-tipping

Dumped rubbish with headstones in the distance A council is considering installing CCTV at a cemetery because of repeated fly-tipping of waste.

The cemetery in Bedwas, Caerphilly, has been used for the dumping of items such as fridge-freezers and rubble.

Caerphilly Council said it had been told on several recent occasions that rubbish had been left at the site.

Councillor Paul Ford described it as "particularly disturbing". The council is considering installing CCTV to identify the culprits.

Mr Ford said: "The insensitivity of some people beggars belief.

"Fly-tipping is a problem across the area, but to target a cemetery as a dumping ground is particularly disturbing.

"We are taking measure to identify the tippers, but I would also urge local people to be on the lookout and report any suspicious behaviour to the council," he added.

The council's bereavement officer, Mike Headington, added: "It seems to be happening on the weekends and late at night.

"People are coming in and dumping it at the bottom of the cemetery and it is so out of keeping with the place.

"We have had a variety of things dumped there - a fridge, old doors, rubble and now a lot of green waste.

"As soon as we clear it up, something is dumped again and there's no need for it because the council will come and collect bulky domestic items for free from households."

Mr Headington said the council was making every effort to trace the people responsible for the dumping.

"I can't understand the mentality of these people - they have no respect for the dead," he said.

"We are asking people if they see anything suspicious to note down a registration number and give us a call," he added.
