Warning helps ease flooding fear

The swollen Wye Estuary in Tintern The main road through a Monmouthshire village was closed on Thursday morning after a severe flood warning.

The spring high tide and rainy weather conditions swelled the Wye Estuary.

A foot and a half of floodwater affected Tintern and the A466 was closed as a precaution.

But residents praised early warnings and the issue of sandbags which prevented homes and businesses being badly flooded.

The Environment Agency said 10 other flood warnings were also in place across Wales with flood watches also set up.

The severe flood warning in Tintern was made at just after 0000 BST on Thursday.

Sandbags were issued to residents and businesses by Monmouthshire Council at about 0700 BST.

The owners of one of the worst affected properties have praised the co-ordination efforts of the authorities in preventing flood damage.

Dawn Floyd who runs Tintern Antiques said that her shop had less than half an inch of flooding.

"Considering it was such a high tide, hardly any water has come in," she said.

"Monmouthshire county council delivered sandbags at seven o'clock this morning, the police closed the road and the Environment Agency took a close interest.

"They've all been fantastic. It's the first time in 27 years they have all got their act together at the same time. It's great."

The Environment Agency has warned further flooding could happen in Tintern on Friday depending on weather conditions.
