Faulty TV set causes house blaze

Fire damage at the house in Holyhead

Firefighters have warned people to unplug electrical appliances overnight after a faulty television caused a serious blaze on Anglesey.

A couple and a two-year-old girl escaped the fire, but the end-of-terrace house in Cybi Place, Holyhead, was badly damaged.

The male occupant was treated for smoke inhalation after he tried to extinguish the fire with blankets.

The family were alerted by smoke alarms at about 0253 GMT.

Fire safety inspecting officer Huw Roberts, of North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said anything not designed to be left on should be switched off at night.

He added: "If you and your family are asleep upstairs, you will be in a very vulnerable position if a fire breaks out.

"Hot plugs and sockets, fuses that blow for no reason, flickering lights and scorch marks on sockets or plugs are all signs of danger.

"It is important to keep your electrical appliances as safe as possible by servicing appliances regularly and avoiding overloading sockets."
