More jobs go at aluminium plant

Dolgarrog Aluminium Ltd Another 14 people are losing their jobs as the final order at a Conwy Valley aluminium plant is completed.

This year Dolgarrog Aluminium has already seen its staff of 170 fall to less than 40, with the company going into administration in the summer.

Since then there have been no acceptable bids for the business, and administrators said until a buyer was found the company would be wound down.

The GMB union said Friday was a very sad one for the local community.

Dolgarrog Aluminium produces a range of products, turning over £19m last year, and is a major employer in the area.

It was set up five years ago following a management buy-out of the former Alcoa plant, and it is the UK's only integrated casting and rolling aluminium mill.

In October, the Welsh Assembly Government turned down appeals to support a rescue package.

The management team at the plant heard they would not be given a grant to help buy out the business, as the business plan was unviable.

Union leaders at the plant said they were disgusted with the decision.
