Life-long horticulturalist's MBE

Medwyn Williams A champion vegetable grower is being presented with an MBE on Wednesday for his services to gardening.

Medwyn Williams, 63, from Anglesey, said he cried "tears of joy" when he heard he was to receive the honour.

His interest in gardening began as a child when his father gave him three packets of quick-germinating seeds to grow on his own patch of land.

Prince Charles will present the honour to Mr Williams, who says he will be wearing a daffodil in his lapel.

"I was about eight or nine when I started (gardening)," Mr Williams told BBC Wales.

'Bit of sadness'

"My father was a farm worker but he offered me a square yard of his vegetable garden and gave me three packets of seeds - mustard, cress and radish.

"He was wise enough in a sense because he gave me veg seeds that would germinate quickly and would harvest quickly thereby keeping my interest going. I've been involved in vegetable growing since that day," he added.

Despite winning many accolades for his gardening skills over the years, including 10 gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show, Mr Williams said he was "flabbergasted" when he heard he would become an MBE.

This award would be among his top three, he said, along with being made an honorary bard by the National Eisteddfod and a fellow of the University of Wales at Bangor.

"The wife and I just hugged each other and cried tears of joy really - although there was a bit of sadness because I couldn't pick the phone up and tell my (deceased) mam and dad - although I'm sure dad will be looking down today and helping me along," said Mr Williams.
