New probe into 2003 postman death

Paul Savage

North Wales Police are to re-investigate the murder of a Flintshire postman nearly six years ago.

A new team of officers will examine the killing of Paul Savage, 30, who died on 4 February 2003 after being attacked by two men while on his round.

The case was never closed, but it will be "re-visited" from Monday, 12 January.

In 2008, a reward for information on the killing was raised from £25,000 to £100,000.

Mr Savage was struck on the head several times with a wooden baton and was found lying in a pool of blood on the driveway of the home of Flintshire councillor Ray Dodd.

The father-of-one, originally from Sale in Greater Manchester, died in Wrexham Maelor Hospital from head injuries following the brutal attack.

In 2005, on the second anniversary of his death, police said they knew the motive behind the murder.

At the time, Det Ch Insp Paul Loftus described the killing as a "stain on the community" and added: "I believe this inquiry is moving towards a successful conclusion."

Reward

However, the killers have never been caught and last year, on the fifth anniversary of the murder, police added a £75,000 reward to the £25,000 already offered by Royal Mail.

In February 2008, senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Wayne Jones said he believed people in and around Mold had potentially useful evidence but had remained "tight-lipped, out of misguided loyalty, or fear of repercussions".

He said the attack had been "cowardly" and the investigation "will not close until it is resolved".

However, on Monday, police will "re-visit" the investigation, with a team of dedicated officers led by Det Ch Insp John Hanson.

"We will be re-visiting all avenues of enquiry in a bid to establish if any new investigative opportunities have arisen," he said.

"We believe that apart from those directly involved in the attack, other people in and around Mold have evidence which could prove useful to the enquiry."

Police say there will be high visibility patrols in Mold and leaflets appealing for help will be delivered to households in the area.

Mold town mayor, Andrea Mearns, said the murder was a "tragic case" that needed resolving.

But she added: "We have got to reassure people that Mold is a very safe place to live.

"We have got crime statistics for the last 40 weeks and in our area overall crime is down eight per cent.

"There was an overall reduction of 20% in violent crime in the last year.

"It's the sort of thing that we want resolved, but it's really not representative of what happens here on a day to day basis - it was an exceptional occurrence."
