Fire evacuees allowed back home

Residents in Gwersyllt

Residents have been allowed back in their homes after evacuations following a garage blaze left gas cylinders in danger of exploding.

People living within 200m (650ft) of the building in Gwersyllt, near Wrexham, were told to leave on Tuesday.

North Wales Police said of the 34 properties evacuated, four people were put up in a community centre while the rest stayed with friends or family.

Fire service officers are still at the scene investigating the fire's cause.

Police said 69 properties fell within the cordon after the blaze broke out but only 34 needed to be evacuated. Around 60 people ended up spending the night away from their homes.

One fire crew remained at the scene overnight cooling down the cylinders.

The Gwersyllt Resource Centre was set up as a temporary shelter.

Angela Strange and her daughter were among the evacuees at the centre on Tuesday evening.

She said she had had to return from work, and had not known where else to take her daughter.

"So it is a big inconvenience, to be honest with you. I've got to go to work in the morning, so it's not good."

Fire crews were called to the garage at about 1230 BST on Tuesday and found it well alight.

They put out the flames, but the building was badly damaged.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service also issued advice to people to take care when storing or handling cylinders.

They said the cylinders in the garage blaze put lives at risk.

The fire service said it was too early to say what caused the fire.
