Hundreds oppose skateboard park

Skateboarders generic Councillors have deferred a decision on whether to allow a skateboard park which has split a community.

More than 800 people in Connah's Quay have petitioned against the floodlit skatepark at Wepre Park, fearing it could lead to anti-social behaviour.

They are also worried about light pollution from the 33ft (10m) pylons.

But Flintshire council said 376 people have signed another petition backing the skate park and the chief planning officer had recommended the go-ahead.

The council's planning committee was expected to vote on the scheme on Wednesday.

But instead, it deferred a decision for further consultation.

The authority wants to build the park in between an existing public car park and a children's play area.

Sound barriers

If approved, the development would include seven pieces of ramps and rails, one of which would be 5.5m (18ft) tall.

Seven 250-watt floodlights, each 10m tall, would also be installed.

In a report, the council's chief planning services officer, Robert Harris, acknowledged there have been "strong objections" to the development.

He said there had been previous instances of vandalism at the existing park, but added there was "no evidence" to suggest the skateboard park would "contribute to or exacerbate this issue".

The council has proposed switching off floodlighting by 2130, and has suggested installing an acoustic sound barrier if required.
