Spare room DJs woo Hollywood star

The Snug Two amateur web DJs persuaded Hollywood actor Jeff Daniels to give an interview - for an internet radio show broadcast from a spare bedroom in Prestatyn.

Mark "Maf" Firth and Lee White set up their own alternative music and chat station called The Snug two years ago.

Actor Daniels has released his own album and was impressed by the show, which is broadcast entirely from Mark's spare bedroom every Thursday evening.

Maf said: "I thought it was a joke when his people got in touch."

He added: "His record company rang us and asked if we wanted to play his music.

"I obviously knew who Jeff Daniels was, but through his films really, not his music.

"We didn't go out of our way to say it's really broadcast from Maf's bedroom"

"We said of course we wanted to play his music. We asked if we could record a jingle from him.

"Eventually they came back and agreed to let us have a half-hour interview with him."

Maf, a computer technician, and Lee, a bank worker, broadcast a two-hour show every Thursday via the internet.

They have just 1,000-1,500 listeners around the world, plus those who download podcasts.

But Daniels' record company heard them playing a track by another of their artists, and rang to see if they would be interested in promoting some of his tracks.

Lee said: "I thought it was a wind-up, and there was no way it was going to be the real Jeff Daniels.

"But it was, and he just seemed like a genuine, honest, down-to-earth guy."

He added: "I really like his music. I don't think he was under any illusion that we are a really big station but we didn't go out of our way to say it's really broadcast from Maf's bedroom."

Dumb and Dumber star Daniels rang Maf and Lee at the terraced house in Prestatyn, and chatted away for more than 30 minutes about his life, career and music.

He also recorded exclusive jingles for the weekly show, and also agreed to give another interview.

Maf said: "We play odd sorts of music, stuff that you wouldn't have heard anywhere else.

"Country is the best way of describing his music, with a lot of comedy. It's good.

"I'm hoping to get him back when he releases his second album.

"If we can get him as a friend of The Snug, that's fine by me."

The two friends subscribe to a website called Live 365, which enables them to set up and broadcast their own internet radio station.

Daniels apparently decided to try his hand at singing after seeing so many other celebrities do the same in order to raise funds for the Purple Rose Theatre Company, which he founded in Michigan in the 1980s.

The tongue-in-cheek album - Jeff Daniels Live and Unplugged - includes a track he wrote, called, If William Shatner Can, I Can Too.

The Jeff Daniels interview will be broadcast by The Snug at 2100 BST on Thursday.
