Pair charged over murder inquiry

Elsie Hughes Two men have appeared in court charged as part of the investigation into the murder of 90-year-old Elsie Hughes.

Charles Jones from Buckley, Flintshire and John Thomas from Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, are accused of attempting to pervert the course of public justice.

Wrexham magistrates remanded the men in custody until March 17, when they will appear before Mold Crown Court.

Retired school cook Mrs Hughes died a day after being attacked in her home in Abermorddu, near Wrexham in September.

Detectives said around £200 in cash had been stolen from her.

Mr Jones, 32, is accused of giving false information regarding a blue Ford Escort van and Mr Thomas, 37, is accused of concealing material evidence - namely by disposing of a Ford Escort van.

A man and a woman in their 50s - from Connah's Quay in Flintshire - who were arrested on suspicion of deception offences against the elderly, remain on police bail.
