Rhodri Morgan is made uni fellow

Rhodri Morgan and Aberystwyth University vice-chancellor Noel Lloyd

First Minister Rhodri Morgan has been made a honorary fellow of Aberystwyth University at a special ceremony.

He was presented with the award by Britain's former ambassador to the United Nations Sir Emyr Jones Parry, the university's president.

Mr Morgan attended a ceremony along with students who were collecting their degrees on Thursday.

Speaking in tribute, Sir Emyr said Mr Morgan was a "true servant of Wales", who had contributed much to the nation.

Sir Emyr added: "The award of a fellowship is the university's conviction that his magnificent contribution to Welsh public life will be long remembered after he steps down in due course."

Mr Morgan joins a long line of distinguished university fellows in Sir Emyr, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams and Hollywood actor Matthew Rhys.
