New tests after boy's canoe death

Stewart McEwan

A promising 13-year-old footballer died after coming out of a canoe and was carried downriver by the current, an inquest has been told.

Coroner Peter Maddox was opening an inquest on Stewart McEwan, of Reading, Berkshire, who was on the River Usk, near Brecon, Powys.

Stewart was airlifted to Hereford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Powys coroner said the results of more tests were awaited and adjourned the inquest for further reports.

A pathologist has so far been unable to find the cause of Stewart's death.

The young goalkeeper, from Earley, was signed in the summer by Reading FC and was part of the team's academy.

Dyfed-Powys Police said before the inquest that a post-mortem examination did not reveal any positive evidence to suggest Stewart had drowned and that his death was being treated as unexplained.

Specially trained officers

Stewart had been on a week-long organised educational trip in the area when the tragedy happened on Saturday afternoon.

As part of the police inquiry, specially trained child witness interview officers from Dyfed-Powys were travelling to Maiden Erlegh school to speak to the children who were with him on the river.

The group had been staying for a week at the Tirabad Residential Educational Centre, Llangammarch Wells, in Powys.

Reading FC will pay tribute Stewart with a minute's applause before the game against Southampton on Saturday.

The Championship side will also wear black armbands.
