Driver's help for mother and baby

A bus driver has been hailed a good Samaritan after stopping to help a woman who broke down with her four-month-old son in the car.

Gareth Wilson, 26, from Brecon in Powys, was driving the number 704 service near Newtown when he saw Natalie Swords was in distress.

He picked the pair up and drove them to Llandrindod Wells, where passengers took care of them until help arrived.

Mr Wilson has been thanked by Ms Swords and commended by employers Stagecoach.

Ms Swords was driving from Cumbria to Swansea when her Ford Escort developed problems.

Father-of-two Mr Wilson saw her pull in and "noticed she was in distress".

'Highest praise'

He added: "I told her to get on the bus with her baby, and I pushed the car to the side of the road.

"There was no way her and that baby were staying there.

"I carried her luggage on the bus and drove on to Llandod [Llandrindod Wells].

"Once we got there, a couple of my regular passengers took her to their house so she could feed the baby, get warm and sort the car out.

"I was just glad to help."

John Gould, managing director of Stagecoach in South Wales, said: "He went above and beyond the call of duty and we can only offer him the highest praise for his actions."

Mr Wilson said he had received a voucher as a thank you from Ms Swords and her son Patrick.
