MP applauds keeper's super strike

It was the long-range strike that every goalkeeper dreams of scoring one day.

Montgomery Town's Steve Goodwin blasted the ball from the edge of his own penalty area, over the head of the opposition keeper and into the net.

Now local MP Lembit Opik has tabled a Commons motion praising it as one of the "greatest and most spectacular goals" in British football history.

Fan Peter Mills said: "It was the type of shot you never think you'll see, and something we'll never see again."

"We all piled on him after the goal in celebration, it was such a stunning strike"

"It came off his foot like a bullet," said Mr Mills, a Montgomery Town stalwart.

The keeper's 80-yard (73m) strike came as the team faced Trewern United in the Division 2 JT Hughes Montgomeryshire League last weekend.

Montgomery Town were 1-0 up with 15 minutes of the game left.

"We had a free kick on the edge of our box and Steve Goodwin came up to take it," recalled Mr Mills, who pulls pints as landlord of The Crown in the town, when he's not pulling on a shirt as right-back for the side.

"Our manager shouted that Trewern's keeper was off his line, and you could see Steve take a couple of steps back and hit the ball.

"We all piled on him after the goal in celebration, it was such a stunning strike.

"I don't think Trewern could believe it.

The whole episode was also captured on camera, and is now a hit on video sharing website YouTube.

Neither did it go unnoticed by the local Liberal Democrat MP.

Mr Opik congratulated the team in the House of Commons with an early day motion reading: "That this House considers Steve Goodwin's goal in the match between Montgomery and Trewern on 26 April to be one of the greatest and most spectacular goals scored in the history of British football."

For the team, the victory secured another vital three points.

"We're pushing for promotion to Division One, so it all helps," added Mr Mills.

"We've got four games left and we need to win three to make sure we make it."
