Festival screens rare Elgar film

Sir Edward Elgar Rare footage of Sir Edward Elgar conducting the London Symphony Orchestra is to be screened at the climax of a music festival in Powys.

Some of the clips, including home movie shots of the composer at home with his dogs, are thought to have never been seen in public before.

The hour-long film compilation will be shown at Gregynog Festival, to mark the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth.

The footage was found about eight years ago, said owners Huntley Film Archives.

The shots of the composer conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, playing Land of Hope and Glory, are believed to have been filmed by British Pathe news at the famous Abbey Road studios in 1929.

There are also home movie clips of Elgar at home with his dogs and at a music festival with author George Bernard Shaw and fellow composer Vaughan Williams in 1931.

"This footage has been seen in private before, but this is probably the first time that it has ever been shown in public," said Amanda Huntley, of Huntley Film Archives.

"It was part of a private collection we were asked to take a look at about seven or eight years ago."

The day-long Elgar At Gregynog event will be held on the festival's final day, on 24 June, and will also include a performance of his work by a string quartet and pianist and a lecture by his biographer Diana McVeagh.

Elgar also has links with the event's venue, Gregynog Hall, and made a private visit there in 1924.

He was a guest of its owners Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, who founded the festival in 1933 and who went on to attract leading musicians such as Gustav Holst and Adrian Boult.

Prize winner

In latter years, composer Benjamin Britten and singer Bryn Terfel also appeared at the classical showpiece.

Festival director and musical historian Rhian Davies said: "As well as marking the 150th anniversary of Edward Elgar's birth, we are celebrating his connections with Gregynog Hall."

Other acts at the festival this year included clarinettist Emma Johnson and BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Rosenblatt recital prize winner Andrew Kennedy.

Mr Kennedy has also been announced as one of the soloists at this year's Last Night of the Proms.
