Armed police make village arrest

The house in Borth High Street A 50-year-old man has been arrested at a house in Ceredigion after a stand-off involving armed police.

Witnesses said up to 20 officers, including dog handlers and some with riot shields, were called to Borth, near Aberystwyth on Tuesday night.

The High Street was sealed off shortly after 2100 BST and an arrest was made at around midnight.

Dyfed Powys Police said a man had been arrested under the Telecommunications Act and was in custody.

The force said officers were called to the address after receiving reports of a man "acting suspiciously".

A spokeswoman added: "Police and firearms officers attended, and a 50-year-old male was arrested for an offence under the Telecommunications Act. He remains in custody at present."

Riot shields

A neighbour, who witnessed the incident, said armed police surrounded the terraced house.

The woman, who did not want to be named, added that armed officers were posted at the front and rear of the property, and the man was arrested around midnight.

Jonathan Griffiths, who was in the Railway Inn pub in High Street, said he saw police officers with riot shields forcing their way into the property.

"Police initially allowed cars past the property, but stopped people walking past," he said.

"They eventually sealed the area off to vehicles and people, and even stopped people walking on the beach behind the surrounding houses."

He added: "There were reports in the village that the man was armed, but there was nothing more specific."
