Final closure for factory

KTH logo The automotive plant KTH in Llanidloes is expected to close for good at the end of September.

The factory, which once employed over 250 staff, has been in the process of shutting over the past few months since the factory announced it was to close earlier this year.

The final 84 workers still employed at the car component firm will leave for the last time, creating a serious employment problem in the town.

The factory used to employ one in 10 workers in the area.

Owners

KTH put the factory on 90-days notice of closure in February after losing a large order to eastern Europe.

The firm had lost millions of pounds in recent years and had been forecast to lose more in 2003.

Efforts by the Welsh Development Agency to find new owners for KTH came to nothing.

A task force has been working with the WDA and the Welsh assembly to draw up a plan to bring new business to the area.

Powys is not classed as an Objective One area so does not receive grant aid through that particular Europe funding programme.

Nor is Llanidloes an assisted area - which means it does not qualify for regional assistance.
